The Marquetry and Inlay Arts

"Instead of reacting against the minimalist impulse that is still prevalent today, ornamentation could now blend with it and ease the sense of alienation that has been the trademark of the twentieth century."
Veronique Vienne, Metropolis, August-September 2002

Marquetry

Marquetry is the art of using colorful veneers of wood, shell and stone to “paint a picture.” Appropriate veneers are selected according to their natural coloring, tone, texture, grain and other qualities. The various shapes used in the image are carefully cut from the chosen materials and precisely fit together.

Inlay

Inlay is the embedding of wood, shell, metal, or other natural materials into pockets routed into the surface of a piece of solid material, using hammers and other specialized tools.  As with marquetry, it is a precise and time-consuming process that creates stunning results.
